Now in its eighth year, Wool Week has become a recognised industry event with pop up exhibitions, workshops and activities appearing all over the UK. Designed to educate and promote the benefits of wool, Wool Week has inspired us here at Corgi HQ to explore this wonderful natural fibre and its unique properties.

Environmentally Friendly - Since wool is essentially just the re-grown hair of an animal, it’s both renewable and biodegradable, meaning it’s a sustainable material that won’t harm the planet.  Who knew wearing wool socks could be so rewarding?

Health Benefits - Wool is known for its soft and cosy feeling fabric, it’s the staple for most of our winter wardrobes. Did you know it’s good for your health and wellbeing? ‘Science is showing that – as well as being a natural, renewable and biodegradable fibre – wool bedding and sleepwear appear to promote a better night’s sleep, and fine wool knitwear can assist people who suffer from particular types of skin conditions.

Consistent with earlier science findings, the early results from a study undertaken by the University of Sydney, Australia, are showing that wool sleeping apparel and bedding increase total sleep time, promote sleep onset and improve sleep efficiency.

Soft and Comfortable – The natural characteristics of wool make it not only soft to touch, but breathable, as the fibres absorb moisture from the skin allowing it to evaporate into the air. Wool reacts to changes in your body temperature, keeping you warm when you feel cold and keeping you cool when you feel warm making it the perfect material to knit socks from!

Wash and Care – Many merino wool garments are machine washable and can be tumble dried, the material also has a protective outer layer helping to prevent stains from being absorbed too quickly, and because wool tends not to generate static, it collects less dust and lint.  Creasing is never a problem with wool garments as the natural elasticity of the material allows it to relax back to its original state, it’s also odour resistant.

Wool really is a wonderful yarn, which is why we have both lightweight and heavy weight socks available in our collections. You can shop our selection of wool socks here
